Luis and his wife Kathe are the founders and artisans of HANDMADE BARCELONA®, an ethical brand of handmade traditional shoes from Cataluña, Spain. They have been making shoes for many years in their family-owned factories in Spain.

They have been hosting a very successful experience teaching travelers how to stitch traditional Catalan espadrilles for a long time. This unique experience has brought them many good reviews in 2019 as a must-do in Barcelona and it is within the 10% Top Experiences Worldwide.

They are not only experts when it comes to espadrilles, but they're also fun and entertaining with their anecdotes and insider stories. Their workshops always turn into a party with music, drinks and dance.

Awesome place!

Visited the shop and was blown away by the experience. The staff were so welcoming and friendly, but not in a smarmy sales pushy way. There was actual hand crafting of shoes going on as we shopped and we were interested to see the process. There was lots of selection, I was able to try on many different styles in my size. The beauty of it all is that if you don't like what is in stock, choose what you do like and it is made for you. I was also super impressed with the ease of shipping my purchase home to Canada. The process could not have been easier and so worth the small shipping cost! When the package came to our house, it was nicely wrapped with a handwritten note of thanks which was a nice touch. Highly recommend!

Fun, Hands-On, One of a kind experience

What a lovely way to spend a few hours! My friends and I knew we wanted an experience driven souvenir for our vacation and the friendly staff at Handmade made that happen for us. The ladies made learning something new fun, worked in the history of the process and made sure everyone had a good time. I recommend making your own espardenyes to everyone!

This is a must if you’re coming to Barcelona. It’s so interactive and you learn so much about the history of espadrilles! Paola was the best instructor! I had the best time ever

Super fun activity making your own espadrilles. Your choice of cloth and ribbon color. 2 styles to choose from. More challenging than I expected but also more fun. Paola and Carolina were so upbeat and engaging. Lots of jokes and storytelling. Some drinking and dancing. Plenty of tips on local restaurants. Shoes turned out fantastic and are the best Barcelona souvenir! Highly recommended.

Just do this! It will be way more fun that you can imagine!!!

OK, so I am a guy and my wife wanted to do this, but I thought it would be boring. I was totally wrong. We both had so much fun. The history behind the espadrilles is fascinating and the class was way more fun than I expected. Making the shoes was harder than it looked, but they were such good teachers and guided us alone the way. They add lots of surprises too that add to the fun... this is NOT just a boring class making shoes... it is so much more. My wife made a beautiful pair of espadrilles with heals and I made a pair for our daughter. They turned out amazing if I do say so myself :-) You will be entertained and be able to take home the best souvenir in Barcelona.

NOTES:
First is getting there, It is located in the Gothic District which is really cool and I would recommend making a day of it. The store is located down a walking only ally so if you are taking a taxi it cant drop you off in front of it. Google maps will show you where to find it, but it is NOT helpful to the taxi driver. We gave our driver the address and Google maps ended up taking him down these extremely narrow allies to a point where he could not drive anymore... was a mistake. Dont give your taxi driver the address, trust me on this! Here is where you want to tell your taxi driver to drop you: Pla de la Boqueria, 08002 Barcelona
From there you will walk down the ally Carrer de la Boqueria for about 5 minutes to another small ally which will lead you to the shop... use Google or Apple maps.

Luis and his wife were so fun! Loved this experience. My espadrilles fit perfectly. The history of the espadrille was unexpected and my favorite part.

A Must Do Barcelona Activity (5 stars is not enough!)

WOW!!!! First of all 5 stars is not nearly enough to express the incredible experience we had at Handmade Barcelona! We attended the Make your own Espadrilles Workshop and it was AMAZING!!!! We arrived to such a warm welcome from Luis, Kathé and their team. We got to learn alot about the history of Espadrilles, how they are made and their significance in the region, before diving in and making our own pair by hand.

The team was super energetic and so much fun! They helped and guided us every step of the way. We were able to hand pick all details from colour and style, to special details making it a truly customizable experience. After we completed making our own Espadrilles we were surprised with Cava, sparklers and snacks....and then the party started! We had a fun runway show and dancing to finish off the workshop.

If you are in Barcelona this is a MUST DO activity!!!!! We are super grateful we were able to have this experience and can't wait for others to make their own Espadrilles too!

We would highly recommend and would do again in a heartbeat. Definitely a memory we will have forever!
